Island of Elba D.O.C. wines

Wine parfume

Elba's wine culture has ancient origins, however, we shall limit ourselves to reconting its more modern times.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s Elba's landscape was very different then from now. Terraced vineyards covered the slopes of the hills up to altitudes of moer than 300 meters, as in the Marciana area.

Following the advent and successive development of turism, the wine-growing property was drastically reduced to its present day 350 hectares, o which only 125 arte enrolled in the list for the various D.O.C. wine classifications. Much of the terracing has been covered whith scrub and woods and has been cancelled from the constructions. The wine productions has retired to more flat areas and has adapted to more modern systems of management.

This regard for the sector is due mainly to the few companies organized for and oriented towards quality wine-growing and wine production. Almost all of them have come together in the Association of Producers.

This associations has created the base for the organization and progress of whole system, and has now been able to place itself in the role of representative recognized by the Authorities and various organizations in the sector.

The Consortium represented almost 70% of the D.O.C. garpes produced and turned into wine on the island (6991 quintals in 1998, equivalent to 4518 hl) and in the near future, many other wine-growers will certainly enter.

Its first significant action was in fact, the official presentation of the "Itinerario Elba delle strade del vino" (Elba Itinerary along the Roads of the Wine areas) project whicht proposed the creation of a route through Elba for the tourist interested in wine and food and the countryside, linked to the "Roads of the Wine Areas Etruscan Coast" route of which many of Elba's companies are already part and whit which increasingly close collaboration is foreseen.
